The Volatile Content of Petroleum Coke Indicates the Coking Temperature

The volatile content of petroleum coke indicates its coking temperature. The coking temperature of kettle coke is high, up to about 700 ℃, so the volatile content of kettle coke is low (3% ~ 7%), while the coking temperature of delayed coking petroleum coke is only about 500 ℃, so the volatile content is up to 8% ~ 15%. The volatile content of delayed coking petroleum coke depends not only on the coking temperature, It is also related to the loading time of residual oil into the coking tower and the conditions of blowing steam into the coke layer. The volatile content of coke discharged from the same tower is also very different. For example, the coke at the bottom of the tower has dense structure, large bulk density and low volatile content, while the coke at the top of the tower has loose structure and much higher volatile content. The volatile content of petroleum coke has little impact on the quality of carbon products, but it has an impact on the calcination operation. It is difficult to calcine petroleum coke with high volatile content in rotary kiln or tank furnace with general structure. The calcination equipment needs to be modified to meet the needs of calcining high volatile petroleum coke.
